Dearest Pioneer Community

Few years have existed that I have been as excited about our 2019-20 school year as I am now. My first year of teaching comes to mind. The year I felt I finally understood the complexity of our profession is also right up there. But this year…there is magic. There is a sense, for many reasons, that our educational stars are aligned and we ARE going to do great things this year. This is not to say we have not accomplished greatness in the past, quite the contrary. But as a team, a unit of purpose, we are all aligned. And that is a great feeling!

Maybe it was the success of our school kick off Stuff the Bus that got my energy jacked up on adrenalin? Maybe it was seeing so many staff members visiting the schools/classrooms and/or just checking in? Or it could have been in seeing how hard team members were working over the summer in ensuring our schools were glowing and ready to go? Maybe it was the camaraderie I saw when our staff participated in the scavenger hunt in search of HOPE? It could have been the messages from Galen Emanuele in saying yes, being present and listening, our quest to make other’s look good, embracing change, and choosing positivity? And even seeing how all our staff was engaged in district and school professional development days felt as if I drank a gallon of Red Bull? And certainly, the Back-to-School Night added to the excitement. It could even be the excitement of AVID and the possibilities on student learning that got my blood boiling with energy? I can’t put my finger on it. I don’t know what point it happened, but one thing is for certain, it happened, and I am glad it did. Yes, this year has a feel to it that anything is possible, that, together, we got this and we are going to figure out how to reach every child.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Teach the children so it will not be necessary to teach the adults.” It is that energy which I feel; that what we are doing will impact the lives and futures of all our kids. It is an iridescent hope for the year, for the future, for our future. I cannot express enough how grateful I feel for being in the Pioneer District. Not a day goes by which I don’t murmur praises of thanks in to the winds, hoping that these words reach the maker of futures as to show and express my gratitude for life. This is truly a slice of Americana – the community of family, values, and support. Yes, I am thankful for being here, but more importantly, I am thankful for each one of you who have endeared yourself to our community which has allowed me to feel the sense of worth, excitement, and hope. It is going to be a great year and I am proud to share it with you all.

Sincerely,

John Gummel
