Websites, Learning Resources and Activity Ideas



We invite families to use these resources to enrich their student's learning as we begin our school year and to enhance learning as we progress through the trimester. Please continue to check back as we will periodically add additional resources. 
 
The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction has published an exhaustive list of resources for Continous Learning from Home.  This is one to bookmark!

Common Sense Media is one of the largest online clearinghouses for reviews of media for kids and families.  There is an entire tab devoted to parents, but can be also accessed by students.  Many of their reviews are linked to the resources.

School Wide Open is another amazing resource from Common Sense Media.  Truly a great site for kids, parents and educators! 


Pre-School - Early Learning

Join the READY! for Kindergarten video series (YouTube) with bonus activities for READY! parents to keep playing and learning during school closures. 

If you have a preschool-age child, check out the free READY! for Kindergarten app with interactive learning games and books, as well as reports and tips to improve your child’s progress. This app is available for free through 
Google Playor the Apple App Store.

English Language Arts

Conversation Journal

Provide a blank notebook and fun pencils or pens, and start a simple conversation with your child, in writing. For example, you may write, “What would you like for dinner tonight? Write the menu down for me.” You can have different family members write notes in it too!

Khan Academy ELA Beta 

(Grades 2-8) We all know that Khan Academy has great math resources. This is the new English Language Arts site. It is not as extensive as their math work just yet but has some wonderful reading and writing lessons available.

PBS Learning Media

Eyewitness to History

History through the eyes of those who lived it.  This site offers readings, images, videos, and audio of events throughout history.

Smithsonian’s History Explorer

Smithsonian's History Explorer was developed by the National Museum of American History in partnership with the Verizon Foundation to offer hundreds of free, innovative online resources for teaching and learning American history.
The site is designed for use by K-12 teachers and students, after-school program providers, families, and individuals interested in lifelong learning.

History Explorer's resources focus on learning history by "reading" objects for the stories they hold about the nation and its many peoples. Learning activities feature artifacts selected from over 3 million items in the Museum's collections, and draw on the expertise of the Museum's renowned curatorial staff.

Google Arts and Culture

The British Museum and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)

(Grade 5) This site uses objects to tell a history of the world. 100 objects from the British Museum and hundreds more from museums and people across the UK. Objects are from 2 million years ago to the present day and are connected to a timeline. This interactive site holds video, text, and beautiful photographs of objects all over the world and at different times.

The History World

(Grade 5) The aim of History World is to make world history more easily accessible through interactive narratives and timelines.

Music and Art

Seattle Symphony

As our community comes together in this time of crisis, the Seattle Symphony will continue sharing performances that provide strength, comfort, and joy. The musicians of the Seattle Symphony have generously volunteered to share free broadcasts with everyone during this time of uncertainty. All broadcasts can be streamed through the Symphony’s social media channels on YouTube and Facebook.
